. >> reporter: there's also a weather alert on the city website. officials will keep residents and merchants updated if water levels continue to rise. let's take a quick look at the creek. you can see it's pretty low at this point, only at about four feet. it floods at 13, but the rain is back. we are getting drenched out here. more rain tonight through tomorrow. >> thanks, elisa. >>> a rough day for holiday travelers on one of the busiest days of the year. the weather did cause long delays. earlier, some flights were running more than three hours behind schedule. but tonight, arriving flights are only 20 to 30 minutes late. conditions tomorrow could make a mess of schedules again, though. keeping of a mess, people on the road are dealing with their own travel woes today. heavy snow and ice combined to create accidents and spinouts. cbs reporter holly has been experiencing the conditions first hand. >> reporter: interstate 80, covered in snow and ice, made more dangerous and slow driving conditions heading up the mountain. most of these drivers are on their way to a holiday vacation, but the

poured. an inch and a half of rain on napa. the city picked up three quarters of an inch and concord an inch and a half. more on the way beginning in the north bay. we'll have the forecast for you ten minutes from now. >>> in the meantime the storm brought serious holiday cheer in the sierra. people who can get to the mountains are being rewarded with several feet of fresh powder. the good luck making the drive. interstate 80 shut down for a while because of accidents and spinouts. it's open tonight but chains are required on 80 and highway 50 by the time the storm moves out, the mountains could see from 6 to 8 feet of snow. and for those traveling a little bit farther than the mountains the weather was still on issue. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is live at sfo where some people may miss christmas with the family. hey eilssa. >> reporter: hi brian, as you can imagine many frustrated travelers trying the get home in time for the holidays, in fact i spoke with one man whose flight was canceled and he said the next available flight is not until christmas day. he's just one of many pas

. city maintenance crews have cleared of debris from the creek and from drains. they say they are as ready as they can be at volvo's diner. >> the only thing is you hope mother nature is on your side. >> we just as much as they can to prepare. >> it was back in 2005 when the creek flooded downtown causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. and if you plan on spending christmas in the mountains, take your time getting up there. interstate 80 is completely covered in snow. yesterday stop and go traffic clogs the highway from gold run all the way to lake tahoe. many drivers were caught off guard. >> there is supposed to be some snow and some slowdowns. i wasn't expecting a closure. i've got my whole family in the car. you want to take too many chances. >> that bumper to bumper traffic was good news for local businesses. this gas station was jampacked. the line for the bathroom stretched out into the cold parking lot. cruise wanted drivers headed up to tahoe to be prepared to have chains handy and drive slow and cautiously. >>> checking road conditions this morning. james requir
